Apple Macintosh Computers
Following many requests, I am now re-offering repair services on Apple Mac computers (vintage computers only). I repaired many of these over the years but stopped a few years ago due to issues with safely dealing with monitors. I am now prepared to accept them again, but with a number of conditions. Please read the following before asking me to look at your computer. These conditions apply to all Apple Macs with built-in monitors, but not to standard desktops.
If you are wanting a repair on the logic board alone and can remove it from the casing yourself:
I will re-cap the logic board BEFORE diagnosing any other fault at a fixed price of £xx (subject to inspection) for standard electrolytic capacitors or £xx for polymer (no leak) capacitors. This means that if you reject any subsequent estimate, or if I am unable to complete a repair due to unavailability of parts, a re-capping charge will still apply. Boards should be well packed for transport including wrapping in a non-conductive material before any bubble wrap or similar (newspaper will do). I will normally be able to work on the board within 5 -7 days of receipt and will estimate the repair cost as soon as possible after that. If the repair (including re-capping cost) is likely to cost less than £xx before return shipping I will go ahead straight away unless you advise me not to when sending the board in.
If you are wanting a repair on the logic board alone and cannot remove it from the casing yourself:
Due to the risks of shipping monitors and the impossibility of getting couriers to insure parcels containing them, I will NOT accept any machine sent to me by courier. In the event one should arrive, I will not do any work on it and will hold it here for collection. I will not under any circumstances return it by courier. If you are local, or prepared to travel to Burnham on Crouch, Essex, I will now accept these for repair. Other conditions are as above, but an extra £xx charge will be applied for the dismantling / re-assembly of the computer. This will apply regardless of whether or not I repair the board.
If you are wanting a re-cap on the analogue (analog) board alone and can remove it from the casing yourself:
I can re-cap the analogue board for a fixed price of £xx (subject to inspection) plus return shipping. Please note that this is NOT a repair service and I won’t be able to test the board when it is outside the case. Please take very great care when packing as these can be easily damaged.

Please be aware that monitor parts are becoming difficult to obtain so there is a larger risk of my not being able to complete a repair.
If you are wanting a repair on a Mac Portable
I will re-cap the portable BEFORE diagnosing any other fault at a fixed price of £xx (subject to inspection). This means that if you reject any subsequent estimate, or if I am unable to complete a repair due to unavailability of parts, a re-capping charge will still apply. Computer should be well packed for transport as the casings on these are easily damaged and I cannot accept any responsibility for physical damage to the casing or screen. I will normally be able to work on the computer within 10 -14 days of receipt and will estimate the repair cost as soon as possible after that. If the repair (including re-capping cost) is likely to cost less than £145 before return shipping I will go ahead straight away unless you advise me not to when sending the computer in. Please be warned, It’s almost impossible to recap the Macintosh Portable without melting some plastic, so while I will take extra care, I cannot accept responsibility for such damage.
Please note that re-capping costs are those normally applied. Where a board has had severe capacitor or battery leakage I will need to do a physical inspection before agreeing to work on it and may quote a higher charge depending on how much extra work is involved in cleaning and repairing affected areas of the board.
